CUT remain unbeaten

So far no team in the ongoing Varsity Football tournament has managed to defeat tournament rookies Central University of Technology.

The Free State team has proven to be a hard nut to crack for tournament ever-presents, University of Johannesburg and University of Western Cape in particular, holding both teams to draws on their own home turfs in two successive weeks.

This after they opened their tournament account with a 2-0 victory over other tournament debutants University of Fort Hare (UFH) three weeks ago.
Last week CUT held UJ to a 0-0 draw and then on Monday this week they claimed another valuable point away from home with a 2-2 draw against defending champions UWC in Bellville, Cape Town.

CUT are second on the log with five points; four points behind log leaders Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) who are leading the pack with nine points.

Against UWC, CUT started like a house on fire and intrepidly took the home side to task inside the opening 15 minutes of the match, but were left to rue the several missed during that short period which saw the visitors put the hosts under severe pressure.

UWC drew first blood in the 26th minute through a super header by Josh Silent, sending the host side 1-0 up into halftime. CUT found the equalizer in the 66th minute through the educated foot of Katlego Motaung who connected perfectly with a cross inside the UWC box. They were however, humbled two minutes later as Silent secured his brace to give the hosts the lead for the second time in the match.

Motaung, who also scored CUT’s first goal, did not take it lying down and responded with a much needed goal in the 83rd minute to also secure a brace of his own leading the match to end in a stalemate.

CUT’s Orapeleng Manopole collected the Man of the Match honours.

On Monday they will be looking to collect more points on home soil when they take on Wits at the CUT Stadium in Bloemfontein.

This will be the first time the Free State boys play at home since the tournament commenced.
