The Premier Soccer League (PSL) is racing towards a startling finish with four teams lining up to boot Orlando Pirates from the top of the PSL log for the coveted ABSA Premiership title.
Moroka Swallows left many in awe as they charged closer to the log leaders when they registered an emphatic 5-2 win over Black Leopards last weekend. This saw the ‘Dube Birds’ move to 50 points on the log, which is mere two points behind the log leaders.
The crucial victory also saw Swallows’ prolific striker and Bafana Bafana legend, Siyabonga ‘Bhele’ Nomvethe, open a steep gap between him and his rivals for the top goal scorer accolade.
Nomvethe’s brace against Leopards saw him increase his goal tally to 18 goals, with only two matches left to the end of the season. He has already surpassed last year’s goal scoring benchmark of 15 goals, which was set by the former Kaizer Chiefs goal poacher, Knowledge Musona.
Closely behind Swallows is Mamelodi Sundowns. They still find themselves in the leading setup despite suffering a humiliating 2-0 defeat at the hands of Chiefs last week. Sundowns are on 49 points – three points behind the log leaders and a single point behind Swallows.
The Tshwane side is still very much in the race and may lift the trophy if they win the remaining two fixtures, provided Pirates become subject to an unlikely feat of losing their remaining two matches.
Sundowns is also closely trailed by their neighbouring rivals SuperSport United, as well as the tenacious Free State Stars. United and Stars are jointly sitting on 48 points and therefore also stand a chance of finishing at the helm if either of them win both their remaining fixtures and the top three leading teams lose all their remaining fixtures.
The fixture lineup for the weekend will roughly indicate who the prospective league champions are, and allay much speculation. All the weekend fixtures will be played tomorrow at 15:00.
