Heidedal-born star Vicus Visser, who was discovered on YouTube by 5FM breakfast presenter Gareth Cliff, has been hard at work on his upcoming album scheduled for release later this year.
At age 10, the youngster recorded a video of him singing the then popular These Arms by All for One. It went viral on YouTube six years later. Huge interest was sparked by the clip both locally and internationally. American record companies such as Sony LA, Def Jam, along with producer and songwriter Steve Morales tried in vain to snatch this young talent.
Now, 17 years old, Visser has settled in Johannesburg with his brother Vincent. He is diligently working on his debut album set to put him on the map in the country’s music industry. His manager, Rina Bromberg, said he is handling the pressure of fame quite well.
“The first single Lovers at First Sight features Vicus’s brother Vincent and the next one for later this year will be Vicus alone. The two have incredible melodies. Vicus has been writing a lot of songs and the public and his fans can look forward to some original material.
“We are still deciding on covers he can add on the album, but we are thinking of playing around with the song in the YouTube clip that launched him to stardom. Vicus is currently undergoing home schooling, doing his matric here in Johannesburg. He and his brother have adjusted quite well in this big city,” she said.
The song has officially been sent to a number of radio stations nationwide. Vicus’s team is also currently working on a music video for the debut single which will be released in the next couple of weeks.
“Being able to be finally working on my album is very overwhelming. A few years ago, I was just dreaming about doing it. I was just like a normal kid living in Heidedal and it is really amazing now that I am working on an album that people will be listening to. The new single is a pop crossover track, both for the youth who love dancing and adults who love rhythm and blues. When I wrote the song I was really consumed by this idea of love at first sight and wanted to explore it through my music,” said the young sensation.
On June 8, Visser will be hosting a charity concert in Bloemfontein that will be emceed by Gareth Cliff. Details are yet to follow.
