Bloem trombonist to record live DVD

Recording first DVD … Trombonist Percy Kurrama will record his first DVD in front of a live audience this weekend.

Seasoned trombonist Percy Kurrama’s performing flair will be immortalised when he records his first live DVD at the Norman Doubell Hall in Heidedal, Bloemfontein this weekend.

Cape to Cairo, Percy Kurrama and the Legends of Cape Town will feature him alongside renowned musicians such as Ricardo Groenewaldt, Sebastian Pietersen, Theo Platinum Smit, Black Current, and Kint Lot.

Kurrama has been working on his album The Story of Percy Kurrama since 2009. The album will be a double CD accompanied by a DVD.

“The album has a number of collaborations as well as original material with a varying mixture of smooth as well as club dancing tracks. It is also a wild album with a hint of African contemporary sounds,” said Kurrama.

The talented trombonist was born in Bloemfontein in 1983 and discovered his love for music at a young age. Kurrama’s father bought him a guitar when he was nine and everybody was surprised by how fast he learned to play.

In 1992, former Performing Arts Centre of the Free State CEO Nathan Bagarette formed a marching band for the Joe Solomon Primary School in which Kurrama played the trumpet.

A former lecturer at the Musicon in Bloemfontein, Bennie Liebenberg, discovered the boy’s talent two years later. Kurrama then became the first non-white student enrolled at the Musicon.

For a decade he refined his musical skills and learned to play the keyboard, drums, harp, and many other instruments. It was there where he was introduced to the trombone.
In 1997, Kurrama started playing in his first band – World Vision.

At the age of 15, he performed for the first time at the Mangaung Cultural Festival alongside artists such as Peter Nthwane and Mbongeni Ngema.

Kurrama wrote and produced the first album of Lesley Morgan in 2005. He has also written and produced the debut albums of Lucan September, gospel group Lashan, as well as soloist Danielle Stilo.

The show starts at 19:00 at the Norman Doubell Hall in Heidedal, Bloemfontein. Tickets are limited. For more information, call 076 725 5724.
