Oscar Nite critic ‘must take chill pill’

Bloemfontein event organisers are taking stabs at each other in the wake of last weekend’s Oscar Nite which was delayed by several hours. The event was scheduled to start at 18:00 last Saturday at the newly renovated Philip Saunders Resort, but due to “unforeseen circumstances” party revellers and artists were left stranded outside the premises for hours. Loud mouth Motheo FM radio presenter Bangi Billionbux, host of the Big Bang Breakfast show, ranted about the event on social networks and his breakfast show this week. Although he was not in town on the night of the event, he accused Oscar Nite event organiser Mavusana ‘Divine DJ’ Nkosi of organising a flop. Speaking with The Weekly in an exclusive interview, Nkosi said he does not owe Bangi any explanation and he chooses not to entertain him on Facebook.

“First of all I’m not going to entertain Bangi. He was not even at the event to start with, so he must just take a chill pill and stop criticising me and rather focus on making his events a success before judging me. His feud with me goes way back. He lobbied people not to go to the Oscar Nite. I feel that if he has a problem with me, he should have called me instead of trying to boost his listenership through discussing Oscar Nite.” Billionbux wrote on his Facebook wall:
“Do you know how it feels to pay R650 and also go out of your way to respect the event by spending even further on your outfit, all for it to be totally disrespected with such planning and organisation like this year’s Oscars? So you can’t press a button and just tell people to ‘get over it’ when they’ve been conned.” After Nkosi posted a public apology on his Facebook page for his followers to read, Billionbux accused Nkosi’s event of being a “flop” because he did not pay for the swanky
venue in time.

“Vusi made a flop. He blamed his suppliers and venue owners. Guess what? I had the info that says that is a lie. He simply didn’t pay the venue right up until Monday after the event even. As a broadcaster? What do I do? You tell me?” he said on live radio. Sources close to Billionbux said he is jealous. “Bangi has always been jealous of Vusi. It’s no secret that he envies his success in events. He was part of the organising team of the Beach Party two weeks ago which also had its
ups and downs, but who judged him?” According to Nkosi, Oscar Nite almost did not happen when the suppliers and sponsors of the event were turned away at the venue on the day of the event. The organisers had to make eleventh hour arrangements with alternative suppliers.

“We would like to take this opportunity and apologise for the inconvenience caused at Oscar Nite 2012. Basically, the show was cancelled due to technical reasons. We tried our level best to get the show going after six hours of serious boardroom talks. We would have not allowed a situation where there was no show at all because we realised the farreaching implications that would have come with it,” read the apology he wrote on his Facebook page wall. Messages of support for the event organisers flooded Facebook. Thabiso Mathibedi, who attended the event, wrote: “Lessons are there to make us strong and keep us grounded. What matters is that the show happened despite the challenges… big up.” Berndj Ramokoena Khotso added: “Screw the haters and complainers, it was an epic night and moshito o tswetse pele (the show continued) as promised”.

Meanwhile, Bloemfontein’s king of dance and self-confessed Skhothane Big Mo (Mpho Mokoena) had a brush with death when the car he was in overturned on returning from the event in the early hours of last Sunday. According to him, he is recovering, but will not be seen on the dance scene for a while.
