FS players shine at AFCON

Soccer players shine … Free State Stars’ Kennedy Mweene and Phenyo Mongala from Bloemfontein Celtic have been doing their countries, Zambia and Botswana proud during this year’s African Cup of Nations.

The Free State’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) teams have a significant number of their players representing their countries at the current 2012 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), which is taking place in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.
Four players from Bloemfontein Celtic and Free State Stars are currently participating in the biggest sporting clash between countries on the continent which kicked off last month in Bata.
Stars players Noah Chivuta and Kennedy Mweene, along with Celtic player Clifford Mulenga, are representing their native country Zambia, while Celtic winger Phenyo Mongala flew the flag high for Botswana, which has since fallen out of the competition after finishing at the bottom of Group D.
Stars midfielder Chivuta is known to be powerful in the Zambian attacking force, and regularly makes a big impact on the field.  His teammate Mweene is a team captain at Stars and is an experienced international goalkeeper.
He is currently Zambia’s first choice goal-stopper. Mulenga, who also plays in the middle of the field, is a quick and creative winger and has been pivotal in Celtic’s current PSL campaign.
After his performances for Zambia in the 2006 African Nations Cup in Egypt, Mulenga won the CAF Young Player of the Year Award in 2007. Mongala has been hailed by many as the most dazzling Botswana export to the PSL. Mongala, who is on loan to Celtics from Orlando Pirates, has cemented a permanent first team place in the Botswana national team.  The players will head back to their PSL clubs after their countries’ respective AFCON campaigns, with the league set to resume on 15 February.
