roadblock nets seven suspects

A total of 1 254 people were searched on Friday last week during a successful roadblock operation on the N1 at Ventersburg.

The operation was a joined collaboration by the South African Police Service (SAPS) Thabong cluster stations, Free State provincial traffic and Emergency Medical Services (EMS).

According to Warrant Officer Malebo Khosana, the lanes heading to Kroonstad and Winburg directions were blocked and about 563 vehicles were stopped and searched.

“Six undocumented persons from Zimbabwe were arrested while travelling with a bakkie to Johannesburg.  They are aged between 19 and 26 years. They will remain in custody pending their deportation by the department of home affairs’ Immigration Branch in due course.

“Their motor vehicle, a blue Toyota bakkie with Gauteng registration number plate was also confiscated by the police as its undocumented driver was driving without a drivers’ license.

“A 49-year-old man from Parys was also arrested for possession of dagga.  The dagga weighing 0.25 grams was contained in two small plastic bags. Another 23-years-old male was arrested in town while walking to the hiking spot with an Okapi knife he had in his possession.  A case of possession of dangerous weapon was opened against him.”

He said motorist should be warned that many more similar operations will be conducted until December.

“During the festive season people think they can get away with all kinds of misbehaviour. People should know that being under the influence and driving or being in public is a serious offence. People who are caught with dangerous and unlicensed weapons will be arrested and people in possession of illegal substances will also spend time behind bars.

“Furthermore, motorists are also advised to make sure that their vehicles are road worthy and all the functions working properly. If you know that you are going to travel, make sure to check your tires, oil and water and most importantly, that your vehicle is licensed,” said Khosana.

The roadblock commander, Lieutenant Colonel Michael Mangojane commended all members who participated in the joint operation from cluster stations, Provincial Traffic and EMS.

“These joint roadblocks are a step in the right direction as we approach the festive season.  We jointly want to send a message to motorists that we will ensure that they do not use our policing precinct for commission of crimes.
