A 28-year-old woman of Thabong was arrested for selling drugs and dagga to the value of about R55 300 by the Thabong South African Police Services (SAPS) crime prevention unit last Thursday evening.
According to police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Malebo Khosana, the arrest took place around 21:20 following a tip-off from a community member about a woman dealing with hard drugs at Jan Toor Hostel in Thabong.
“The members of the Thabong SAPS Crime Prevention swiftly followed up the information to one of the houses at the said hostel. On arrival at the address, Constables Lehlohonolo Moriee and Lucky Mosholaiba knocked and their knock was answered by a woman who opened the door for them.
“Constable Moriee announced their visit and she permitted them to enter the house and search it. During the search they allegedly found plastics containing dagga, 1 033 half mandrax tablets, 176 Boss tablets and 11 half CC tablets and powdered mandrax. The powdered mandrax was contained in two lunchboxes while the half mandrax, Boss and CC tablets were inside separate plastics.
“The 28-year-old woman and owner of the house were immediately arrested and taken under police custody. The drugs were confiscated. The dagga weighed 5.930kg and had an estimated street value of R5 300 while other drugs are estimated at R50 000.”
He said the woman was charged for possession or usage of a dependence-producing substance under ACT 140/1992 Sec 4. She will appear at Welkom Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
Leaders of the Thabong community said they are very pleased with the arrest of this woman and hope the police will act on all the dagga and drug dealers in the area.
“Our children are being used as mules at school and in the neighbourhood to participate in what seems to be ‘a new fashion’ in townships such as Thabong. Crimes like rape and abuse can be drastically reduced if the authorities can have a handle on the level of substance abuse,” said a community member and pastor, Joseph Davids.
The station commander of Thabong Brigadier Cois Muller also praised the Thabong SAPS crime prevention unit members for the arrest.
“This is a good success in the sense that it will send a message to drug dealers and users that Thabong is not a place for these dangerous substances. I thank our members for their quick response to the information as well as the community member who tipped them. We need this valuable information to keep Thabong safe from drugs and other serious crimes,” concluded Muller.
