“I hate fame. It does not pay. I want to make money through my hard work.”
That is how local artist, Katlego Makatsa, illustrates his ambitions as musician.
The 29-year-old, who is a managing director and singer of the Choyz music group, is making waves in the domestic music circles with his music video that is already a hit on both DSTV and SABC.
Makatsa, who started his music career in 2002, has always known he will make it big in the industry.
“I always knew that through hard work and perseverance I will fulfill my dreams; this has been a journey, things did not happen overnight,” he explained.
The music video Dikatareng, which has been the talk of the town, is set to dazzle many Hip-Hop fans.
“A journey of miles begins with small steps. I started with Universal Productions and it took us years to release just one album. After years of struggling, we joined Gorilla Productions and everything fell into place,” said Makatsa.
Makatsa said Universal Productions has taught him a lot.
“I will always appreciate the support that Chicco Thwala and Mandoza gave me, I am grateful for all the experience they gave me,” said Makatsa.
Makatsa has worked very hard to impress his producers:
“We have been working day in and day out but I do not regret any of those long hours. In the end it was all worth it,” said Makatsa.
He urged other artists to take initiatives and seek out sponsors.
“This is not an easy industry; if you are an artist you must think out of the box, knock on every door. It might not be easy but it’s worth the try,” said Makatsa.
The talented Makatsa, who hails from Bloemanda, feels that the Free State department of arts and culture needs to learn a thing or two from other provinces.
“Take a look at KwaZulu-Natal, for instance. Their arts and culture department supports local artists. We have the Alan Foundation and Khaya who have their studios in the Free State but the department has never funded them.
“I am not a politician but I like the MEC for tourism and environmental affairs, Mamiki Qabathe. The lady reaches out to artists. I cannot say the same for the department of arts and culture.”
Choyz is a trio consisting of Makatsa, Fikile ‘Maraba’ Mhlasu and Thato ‘Chopboy’ Mothabi.
