Bloemfontein Celtic have confirmed that attacking midfielder Ndumiso Mabena has renewed his contract with the side for a further three years.
Mabena’s future has been the subject of much debate and media speculation, but it is now official – he has committed to the Free State club, who have lost a number of their top stars in this transfer window.
“Despite media speculation linking Ndumiso Mabena with various PSL clubs, the experienced midfielder has renewed his contract with Siwelele for a further three years. He is contracted to Celtic till the 2021/22 season,” the club confirmed on Wednesday.
Maritzburg United Club who were interested in Mabena’s services also confirmed the deal had fallen off, saying: “I did mention that there was a possibility of the deal not going through if the player and his agent put a steep price and indeed it played out that way.”
United boss Farook Kadodia said the club was indeed interested in the services of Mabena. “Without a doubt, he remains one of the most hardworking players in the league and that’s part of the reason why he was identified but things didn’t go accordingly and there’s absolutely nothing we can do about it,” he said.
Mabena has been a stalwart for Celtic in his two seasons at Celtic, making 60 appearances and scoring 11 goals.
He also previously played in the PSL for Platinum Stars and Orlando Pirates, where he won every trophy on offer in domestic football, including two Absa Premiership titles.
Celtic are also set to sign a Lesotho international striker after he impressed the club during trials. Sera Motebang has been training with Celtic for the past few days after being invited by the club for an assessment.
The Matlama FC striker is reported to have made a great impression with Phunya Sele Sele and the club is preparing to finalise his signature before the start of the new season.
Siwelele CEO Khumbulani Konco has confirmed the presence of Motebang at the club’s training camp for pre-season training. “Yes, he is here and training with us,” Konco confirmed.
Celtic have lost Kabelo Dlamini, Tshegofatso Mabasa and Bongani Sam to Orlando Pirates but have managed to tie Mabena to a new contract.
